Primer
Primer basically "primes" the skin before you apply makeup, i.e it prepares the skin for makeup to be applied. Putting foundation straight onto the skin can clog pores and actually make them appear worse. This is where primer comes in as it helps smooth them out and gives a more airbrushed finish. It can be used as a "base" for foundation. It gives the foundation something to stick to and in turn also helps makeup to stay on. If you put foundation on without a primer V with one you'll find that your foundation will last you longer throughout the day with it. I've found this one works really well:
...Or a cheaper alternative is:
If you find that you have dry skin and when you apply foundation it sticks to dry patches or makes your skin look dull you could try an illuminator as a primer. Two good one's are:
Tools
It's important to keep your makeup brushes/sponges as clean as you can. If you go too long without cleaning them they can become clogged up and won't give you same finish when you apply your foundation. A good way to clean them is by using surgical spirits - you can get this from Boots for £4.The tools you use also makes a difference to the way your foundation looks. Three options are:
(1)Beauty Blenders
You can get cheaper alternative's of these from Primark that work just as well. Beauty Blenders are really popular and give you an airbrushed look. They take longer to blend than the brushes but the finish is good. They work best when dampened. Tip!! Spray with setting spray instead of water and it will help foundation stay on.
(2) Buffer Brush
If you are using a buffer brush you'll need a good quality one with packed bristles. These give you a full coverage look and as the name suggests "buffs" out your foundation.
(3)Stipple brush
A stipple brush has less fibres than a buffer brush so foundation in more lightweight and natural. You might still need to use a make up sponge though to set it.
Setting powder
Using a powder over your foundation will set it and make it stay in place. If you don't want your foundation to become "cakey" the Kat Von D one is good because it's lightweight:
Using a setting spray
Like primer setting scary helps your makeup stay on longer. Spray onto your face after you've applied foundation and powder. A couple of good ones are:
